After 13 years of ethnic warfare that resulted in 300,000 deaths, the 2006 ceasefire started a recovery process for Burundi. Today, USAID actively collaborates with the Government of Burundi (GOB), international donors, and implementing partners to upgrade health and social services, advance democracy, improve food security, and rebuild the country’s economy.
Specifically, this aid will assist the Government of Burundi to revise the national electoral law in line with international standards, in preparation for the 2015 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections. It will also enable Burundi to set up a mechanism to resolve any election-related disputes.
