Today, Administrator Samantha Power announced the United States, through USAID and the U.S. Department of State, will contribute an additional $37 million to Education Cannot Wait (ECW), the only global fund for education in emergencies. The announcement was made virtually during ECW’s High Level Steering Group meeting today.

On September 24, Administrator Power met with Simon Coveney, Ireland's Minister of Foreign Affairs. The two discussed their shared commitment to combating the climate crisis, responding to the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, and advocating for unhindered humanitarian access to the people of Syria. Administrator Power thanked the Foreign Minister for Irish leadership in the UN Security Council to draw attention to the dire humanitarian crisis in northern Ethiopia.

At the United Nations Food Systems Summit, Administrator Samantha Power announced that the United States plans to commit $5 billion over five years to Feed the Future, the U.S. Government’s global hunger and food security initiative, and an intent to expand Feed the Future to additional countries. She also shared highlights from the U.S. Government’s enhanced Global Food Security Strategy, which guides Feed the Future and was updated to meet today’s complex demands on global food security, including COVID-19, climate change, increasing conflict, rising inequality, and malnutrition. Partnering with governments, the private sector, local actors, and the broader U.S. Government, Feed the Future aims to contribute to a 20 percent reduction in poverty and child stunting in the areas where Feed the Future works and mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact. Taken together, these announcements reassert America’s commitment to ending global hunger, poverty, and malnutrition, and helping advance the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2, Zero Hunger.

Today, during a virtual high-level side event of the 76th UN General Assembly, the United States announced nearly $180 million in additional humanitarian assistance for Rohingya refugees, affected host communities in Bangladesh, and the people of Burma. This new funding includes nearly $55 million through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), along with an additional $124 million through the U.S. Department of State.

Today, Administrator Power met with Vietnam Deputy Minister of National Defense Hoang Xuan Chien. The Administrator thanked Deputy Minister Chien for our long-standing partnership with the Government of Vietnam and for the Ministry of National Defense’s strong leadership, and close cooperation, on addressing war legacy issues. The Administrator affirmed USAID’s commitment to overcoming war legacies, including jointly cleaning up dioxin contamination at Bien Hoa Airbase, strengthening health and social services to improve the quality of life of persons with disabilities in Vietnam, regardless of cause, and improving DNA analysis techniques to find and identify the remains of Vietnamese combatants who are unaccounted for.

Today, during a high-level side event on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly, U.S. Senior Advisor for Special Political Affairs Ambassador Jeffrey DeLaurentis announced nearly $247 million in additional humanitarian assistance for the nearly 12 million people affected by the Venezuela regional crisis as well as $89 million additional development funds for economic integration and democracy support.

Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Assistant to the Administrator Sarah Charles, in the Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, announced nearly $291 million in additional humanitarian assistance from the American people for Yemen during a virtual high-level side event on the margins of the 76th UN General Assembly. This funding will provide lifesaving aid for Yemenis enduring one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, caused by nearly seven years of war and compounded by a deepening economic crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The United States strongly condemns the failed attempt by members of the Sudanese security forces to seize power from Sudan’s Civilian-Led Transitional Government (CLTG). These actions sought to undermine the will of the Sudanese people, who made extraordinary sacrifices during the 2019 revolution to end the country’s brutal dictatorship and who continue working for a democratic, peaceful, and prosperous future shared by all Sudanese.  We stand with the people of Sudan and the CLTG, and strongly oppose any attempts to disrupt Sudan’s transitional process.
