TIRANA, OCTOBER 8, 2015 - The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), in collaboration with the Embassy of Sweden in Albania, is seeking concept papers to implement activities to promote sustainable tourism in Albania. The purpose of the activities is to contribute to improvements in Albania’s tourism sector, including improvements to the country’s business enabling environment and workforce capacities, to serve as catalysts for job creation and economic growth. Over the next five years, USAID and Sida will invest USD 6 million, to be matched with USD 3 million of funds from ‎winning projects.

USAID Country Representative, Marcus A. Johnson; Head of Development Cooperation for Sweden, Birgitta Jansson; and Minister of Economy, Trade, and Tourism, Arben Ahmetaj, delivered remarks today at a ceremony to launch the Annual Program Statement, a call for concept papers and ideas.

TIRANA, OCTOBER 28, 2010     Today, Albania’s first national training center for obstetrics and gynecology opened its doors at the Queen Geraldina Maternity Hospital in Tirana. The training center, which is operated in cooperation with the University of Tirana Medical Faculty, received $10,000 worth of medical equipment from USAID that will allow medical students to practice safer and more effective clinical procedures for delivering babies and caring for mothers in Albania.

TIRANA, OCTOBER 21, 2010      USAID’s Local Governance Program in Albania (LGPA) released a study on “Immovable Property Tax – an Innovative Instrument for Increasing Local Revenues” during a roundtable discussion organized with representatives from local government units, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Interior, the Immovable Property Registration Office, and other stakeholders.  The research and policy study was prepared by urban finance experts from Co-PLAN, with support by USAID and the Open Society Institute’s “Influence on Policymaking” project.

TIRANA, OCTOBER 15, 2010     The Albanian Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosovo, in collaboration with Health Ministries of both countries, held an international conference today to address challenges in managing health care systems in the region. Organized with the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the conference took place at the Albanian Academy of Sciences.

TIRANA, SEPTEMBER 28, 2010     USAID’s Local Governance Program in Albania (LGPA), in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior and the Urban Research Institute (URI), held a roundtable today with representatives from local government units, line ministries, and other interested stakeholders to present a new manual to help cities manage local assets.

TIRANA, SEPTEMBER 26, 2010     USAID’s two maternal and child health programs have partnered with Albania’s Institute of Public Health to raise awareness of using modern contraception to mark World Contraception Day on September 26, 2010. 

USAID sent over 20,000 text messages to Albanian adults 18-35 years old with the message, "It's your life, it's your choice - Use modern contraceptive methods to avoid unplanned pregnancies" – supported by USAID’s health programs to promote maternal and child health.
