This past year, the United States and Mali worked together to provide malaria services that saved lives and supported communities. Investments in malaria prevention and treatment tools, along with the training and equipping of health workers, advanced Mali’s progress against the disease while strengthening the country’s health system.

The U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) has partnered with Mali to fight malaria since 2008, contributing $364 million to date and $25 million in FY 2022. PMI’s Annual Report, released today, showcases how PMI is working with partner countries, such as Mali to help make sure all those at risk from malaria are protected and to support local communities to shape and lead activities to end malaria faster.

Through PMI funding and programs, over 1.8 million life-saving insecticide-treated bed nets, 4.5 million malaria tests kits, more than four million fast-acting medicines, and over nine million preventive treatments for children were delivered to clinics and communities in Mali over the past year. PMI protected an additional 270,000 Malians through indoor-residual spraying, including in hard-to-reach areas of central Mali. Nearly 8,000 trainings were delivered to improve the ability of health workers to test for and treat malaria while strengthening their skills to care for patients suffering from other illnesses.

Assisted by PMI investments, Mali is using proven and cost-effective methods to keep people safe from malaria and help families forge a more healthy and prosperous future. According to United States Chargé d'affaires Richard Nicholson, The U.S. government’s commitment to the health and wellbeing of all Malians is stronger than ever and we remain your steadfast partner in the ongoing fight against malaria and other life-threatening illnesses.

U.S. Global Malaria Coordinator Dr. David Walton said, “The United States is proud of our work with Mali to help people live free from the threat of malaria. By working together, building stronger and more resilient frontline health systems, and supporting local communities to lead the fight against the disease, we can defeat malaria once and for all.”

About PMI: The U.S. President's Malaria Initiative (PMI) supports 24 partner countries in sub-Saharan Africa and 3 programs across the Greater Mekong Subregion in Southeast Asia to control and eliminate malaria. Led by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented together with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), PMI delivers cost-effective, lifesaving malaria interventions—such as insecticide-treated bed nets, indoor residual spraying, and essential medicines—and invests in health workers and health systems to accelerate the global fight against this deadly disease. Thanks to the generosity of the American people, PMI benefits more than 700 million people each year.
