As part of the recently announced $2.76 billion in U.S. government funding to address the global food crisis, USAID provided $12 million in new resources to Malawi to protect vulnerable populations from the escalating crisis exacerbated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

These funds will address disruptions in agricultural supply chains and expand access to finance to help farmers like Efilida Chimalira obtain the inputs necessary for the upcoming planting season, and support some of the most vulnerable Malawians with cash for work programming.

This new funding will reach 100,000 farmers with improved inputs, agricultural practices and technologies, and is in addition to the current annual budget of $28 million for humanitarian assistance in Malawi.

Efilida Chimalira displays groundnuts she harvested in 2022, after receiving 40kg of improved groundnut seed as part of an input package loan from Community Finance. USAID’s Feed the Future Malawi Ag Diversification Activity works with Community Finance to provide farmers in Malawi with access to improved seed and other inputs–such as fertilizer and inoculant–that improve yields and increase incomes. The CG9 seed that Efilida planted is also more resistant to Groundnut Rosette Disease.
