Rising authoritarianism in the Indo-Pacific region hinders countries from standing up to coercion and making sovereign choices and political decisions. Strengthening the integrity of institutions and systems will help governments fulfill their mandates and advance needed reforms.

USAID supports civil society organizations, independent media, and others advancing participatory governance that is accountable to its constituency. USAID promotes a return to democratic processes in those places where authoritarianism has gained a foothold by uplifting democratic champions as they advance democratic principles and practices. Working with governments and NGOs, USAID increases citizens’ access to services and reduces opportunities for corruption.
