On behalf of our current and former USAID/Panama staff, I would like to welcome you to our website. We hope to highlight the joint achievements we have had with the Government of Panama over 50 years of successful bilateral cooperation. During that time, USAID has worked closely with Panamanian partners to develop infrastructure, strengthen institutions, promote health and education and support the protection of Panama’s natural resources and unique biodiversity. With officials of the Government of Panama, we have identified development priorities and cooperated in addressing those priorities. This collaborative approach has made USAID assistance more effective and more sustainable for the long term. Effectiveness and sustainability mean success in development terms and we will end our USAID presence in Panama later this year.
By September of 2012, the U.S. Government through USAID and its predecessor agencies will have provided $1.2 billion in bilateral economic assistance to Panama. I am pleased that this assistance has been responsive to Panamanian priorities and positively affected the lives of so many people. I am especially proud of our USAID Panama team and their contributions to meeting the current challenges of citizen security, reform in the judicial sector, and environmental management particularly in the indigenous territories. They, along with their very talented Panamanian government counterparts, have made remarkable progress in these areas and in planning longer-term strategies for the months and years ahead.
USAID’s ultimate goal is to help create the conditions where our work is no longer needed. We see many of those conditions in Panama today. In recognition of Panama’s robust economic growth and its capacity to address development challenges, USAID will close operations in Panama and focus our resources in other countries. Panama has transitioned from donor-recipient to economic partner and we are honored to have worked with the Panamanians in facilitating that transition.
Thank you for visiting our website and for your interest in USAID Panama.
