About

Despite significant development challenges, the Government of Haiti and its people are determined to recover and move forward following periods of political unrest and the effects of natural disasters.

Haiti’s challenges were heightened significantly by the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck on Jan. 12, 2010, killing more than 230,000 people, displacing more than 1.5 million, and affecting more than 3 million. A cholera epidemic that broke out in October 2010 further challenged the post-earthquake environment.

USAID has been a leader in U.S. Government efforts to rapidly respond to the humanitarian emergency following the earthquake, support recovery initiatives, and establish the foundation for reconstruction and longer-term development. In addition, the rapid response to the cholera outbreak, which included significant USAID support, has helped to significantly reduce fatality rates. We continue to work closely with other U.S. Government agencies as part of the whole-of government approach; efforts are coordinated closely with other donors, with the Government of Haiti in the lead.
