Ashgabat, November 10, 2014 – Today, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, will launch a training course that focuses on introducing Turkmen specialists to best practices in international tourism planning and development. Representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Country Director for USAID in Turkmenistan, Ms. Brandy Witthoft, will open the event and welcome participants from Turkmen government agencies. Over the course of five days, three specialists from the United States will share their expertise on sustainable tourism development, discussing such topics as planning, economic tourism, tourism and cultural heritage, branding, marketing and social media, and the latest trends in the field.

Livestock Sector Development

On December 5 and 6, the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Agriculture Technology Program conducted a two-day conference on livestock sector development in the Avaza National Touristic Zone of Turkmenbashy. Dr. Thomas Graham, the CEO of Veterinarians Without Borders, and Dr. Bonnie van Blarcom, an international expert on the World Trade Organization (WTO), presented international best practices in the areas of livestock genetics, effective breeding and veterinary care, and livestock sector management and development. They also discussed WTO standards for the livestock sector and the potential benefits of international trade in livestock.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) supported a study tour of ten Turkmenistan government officials to Brussels, Belgium. The study tour on March 25 - April 2, 2013 provided advanced training and insights on International Protocol, Cross-Cultural Communications and Negotiations. The government officials taking part in the study tour represented the key Turkmen government ministries and agencies including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Economy and Development, the General Prosecutor’s Office of Turkmenistan, and Turkmen Gas.

On June 1, Junior Achievement Worldwide opened a three-day workshop aimed at improving standards and customer service in Turkmenistan’s tourism and hospitality industry.  With funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and Chevron Nebitgaz B.V. Turkmenistan, the workshop discussed international standards in the hospitality industry with representatives from across a broad spectrum of Turkmenistan’s government, as well as private entrepreneurs.
