PRIORITIZING GLOBAL HEALTH AND PREVENTING THE SPREAD OF DISEASE

The health sector is the largest portfolio of U.S. development assistance to Côte d’Ivoire, particularly through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), which supports the Government of Cote d’Ivoire’s efforts to achieve epidemic control, including contributing one-third of the national anti-retroviral drug needs. Côte d’Ivoire’s status as a priority country under the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) prepares the country to prevent, detect, and respond to the next pandemic before it becomes a public health emergency. Under GHSA, USAID coordinates with Ivorian counterparts to assess gaps in border health security and identify the most threatening infectious diseases to Côte d’Ivoire. USAID’s efforts also include combating Neglected Tropical Diseases. In addition, the President's Malaria Initiative (PMI) helps reduce malaria deaths and substantially decrease malaria morbidity, with the long-term goal of elimination of malaria in Côte d’Ivoire.

PROMOTING LASTING STABILITY PEACE AND DEMOCRACY

USAID promotes inclusive governance, stability, and responsiveness to citizens’ needs.  In anticipation of a contested 2020 presidential election, USAID is supporting political parties and civil society to increase the participation of citizens, particularly youth and women, in the political process.  Our programs promote skills-building for civil society actors around advocacy and entrepreneurship; including practical hands-on training for journalists in traditional and social media, and provide a space for political actors to discuss and come to consensus. Interventions center around addressing post-conflict grievances, including reconciliation, land, and addressing the spill-over of violence from Burkina Faso and Mali. USAID supports dialogue between security forces and the community as well as increased media coverage with positive narratives to counter extremist risk factors. USAID also supports economic opportunities for women and youth in marginalized and conflict-risk areas.

CREATING NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR PRIVATE SECTOR AND TRADE

USAID supports a regional approach to economic recovery in Côte d’Ivoire, increasing agricultural productivity and decreasing trade barriers to help the country return to its pre-crisis economic prosperity. Interventions focus on promoting trade in key value chains under the Ivorian national export strategy, namely building capacity to meet sanitary and phytosanitary export requirements. USAID supports inclusive growth that expands opportunities for more Ivorians, particularly for youth and women.  In addition, U.S. development assistance seeks to increase access to capital and financial intermediation for small and medium-sized enterprises, while promoting policies and activities that encourage entrepreneurship and innovation.

ENERGY

USAID supports the expansion of the Power Africa Initiative to Côte d’Ivoire, with a focus on helping the Ivorian government increase connectivity to electricity through the national power grid and off-grid solutions, especially in rural areas. This effort brings together technical, financial and legal experts, the private sector, financiers, and Ivorian government to work in partnership to increase the number of people with access to power and strengthen Côte d’Ivoire’s energy sector.
