Gaborone, Botswana - The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) officially launched the new Southern Africa Trade Hub in Botswana on Thursday, November 18, at the Gaborone Sun Conference Center.
Harare, July 8, 2010 – Long-term USAID partner the Africa Centre for Holistic Management (ACHM), based in Matabeleland North Province, was last month named the winner of the 2010 Buckminster Fuller Challenge for devising progressive land management techniques to combat climate change.
The Regional Acquisition & Assistance Specialist (RAAS) is located in the Regional Acquisitions and Assistance Office (RAAO) of USAID/Southern Africa. The function of this office is to provide procurement support technical offices of USAID/SA, the Regional Inspector General (RIG) Office and client missions supported by USAID/SA. The client Missions include Angola, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Regional Programs (Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland), South Africa and Zimbabwe. There are 11 similar positions performing formal acquisitions and assistance activities in the RAAO.
USAID promotes improved rule of law and respect for human rights in Southern Africa. The program works to expand competencies, develop networks of human rights and rule of law defenders, and promote democratic principles and practices. In South Africa, USAID is supporting South Africa’s leadership in advancing stability in the region and addressing the critical human rights issue of gender-based.
In Southern Africa, people with access to resources and those without are likely to experience “justice” in different ways. In many countries, especially those with high levels of corruption, the elite manipulate the law in their favor. In several countries in the region, there is an egregious lack of respect for human rights.
