USAID's Strategic Objective in Sierra Leone

Since its creation in 1961, USAID has become the principal US agency operating worldwide in support of democracy, health, economic development, humanitarian assistance and food security. USAID works through non-governmental and international organization and in cooperation with host governments to improve living conditions in the developing world.

The goals of U.S. assistance in Sierra Leone are to prevent conflict from recurring; help Sierra Leone to continue to become more democratic, accountable and just; improve social services; and spur economic growth and job creation. USAID’s strategy is to support the achievement of these goals through one overarching approach: strengthening democratic governance across sectors. The USAID/Sierra Leone 2006-2008 Mission Strategy therefore consists of a single Strategic Objective entitled ‘Enhance Democratic Governance.’ This strategy has been indefinitely extended.

USAID has adopted a multidisciplinary approach to achieve results under this strategy. USAID is implementing sector-specific activities in local governance, elections, mineral sector reform, agriculture, and livelihoods promotion. These activities are strengthening both public and private institutions to become more accountable, transparent, and effective. Across activities, emphasis is placed on empowering marginalized groups, particularly women and youth.
In addition, USAID is providing humanitarian assistance through PL 480-funded health and agriculture programs.
