November 25, 2008:  Thank you very much for the opportunity to speak here today; I am so very pleased to join Minister Hogan at this ceremony.  Just two years ago this week, U.S. Ambassador Eric Bost came to ZuziMpilo, to cut the ribbon and open the doors of ZuziMpilo to HIV-positive people who want high-quality and affordable treatment.

Dr. Carleene Dei, USAID Southern Africa Director, Launch of “Scrutinize” Public Service Announcements, HIV Prevention, South Africa—May 14, 2008
May 14, 2008:  Thank you to our incredible public and private sector partners for picking the best scientific, creative and analytical brains available for this campaign.  You have researched, examined and developed wonderful public service announcements for South Africans to assess their risk to HIV infection based on the sexual behaviors and partnerships that place people at risk of infection.

USAID Southern Africa SAIBL II Launch: Announcement of SAIBL II Awardee Gallagher Estate; Midrand, South Africa
March 11, 2008:  Good evening.  As you have heard, USAID’s SAIBL began in 1998 as a program to assist black small and medium size enterprises to become more competitive and more productive and to grow market share.  But progress has been gradual.  As is the case with many SME development programs, even those assisted by black economic empowerment strategies or affirmative action policies, these activities are difficult to implement.  It is extremely difficult for SMEs to enter new markets and sustain business growth.  However, we are making progress towards this goal.

USAID/SOUTHERN AFRICA MISSION DIRECTOR, DR. CARLEENE DEI, Launch of Kganya Motsha Adolescent Centre, Soweto, Associated with the Perinatal HIV Research Unit, February 14, 2008
February 14, 2008:  The Kganya Motsha Adolescent Centre is being opened officially today because Sowetan teenagers need a reliable place to go for medical help.  They need to speak with people they can trust who have accurate information and communicate in a way that makes sense to adolescents

Men As Partners Launch
January 16, 2008:  Working with the South African government to address the issue of gender violence has long been one of the top priorities of the US Embassy here in South Africa.
