1998 Speeches

USAID Alumni Association Banquet - "Foreign Assistance at Work: Investing in People", November 20, 1998 - Randburg
November 20, 1998:  I’m excited to be with you here at the banquet tonight. This occasion is very special, for it marks the first official gathering of the USAID Alumni Network in South Africa. This event allows me the privilege of acknowledging the hard work and achievements of you--and thousands of other South Africans who couldn't join us tonight--who have taken advantage of USAID's bursary and scholarship programs.

Senior Executive Program Dinner, 10 December 1998, Johannesburg
October 12, 1998:  Thank you for inviting me to join your "victory" dinner tonight. It is a great pleasure to be here with such an esteemed group. I have one of those very pleasant, but all-too rare, opportunities to extend a special greeting of CONGRATULATIONS to those of you who have just participated with the very first Southern African Senior Executive Program

William Stacy Rhodes, USAID/South Africa Launch of the Transkei Initiative, Friday, 21 August 1998, Tsolo Courthouse in Transkei
August 21, 1998: It is very gratifying for me to be here in Tsolo for the Launching of the Transkei Initiative.  I'm honored to represent USAID at such an important event and to share the day with such esteemed colleagues like Premier Stofile, the Mayor, the Chiefs, Minister Omar, Minister Radebe and the Tsolo Community.

June 25, 1998: Historically, USAID has and will continue support to the Department of Constitutional Development's efforts to create an ENABLING POLICY ENVIRONMENT for developmental local government, aimed at improving the living standards of ALL South Africans.

Aaron Williams, Signing Ceremony of the Grant Agreement with the Ministry of Justice/Black Lawyers Association
June 23, 1998:  It has been one of my most profound pleasures during my time here in South Africa to see the Administration of Justice Project (the US government’s first Bilateral agreement with the Mandela government after the 1994 elections) with the Ministry of Justice blossom and help support Justice Vision 2000.
