Anglo Platinum will be launching its BEE Supplier Development Programme at two of its mines in Limpopo and the North West Province on the 23rd and 30th March respectively. In Limpopo, the launch will take place at Meropa Casino Conference Centre, Polokoane and at the Anglo Platinum Recreation Club, Rustenburg, in the North West.
The development programme, which is being rolled out in partnership with the USAID funded South African International Business Linkages (SAIBL), focuses on building the capacities of SMEs supplying Anglo Platinum mines with goods and services.
“We have realised that many black owned SMEs in our supply chain require an up-skilling in the management of their businesses and the quality of their offerings. Once their competitiveness has been enhanced, they will be able to win more lucrative contracts”, said Pumlani Tyali, Anglo Platinum’s Socio-Economic Development Consultant.
A total of 52 companies have so far benefited from accredited training courses which included business and financial management, marketing, tendering skills, quality control and management as well as safety, health and environment. Additional interventions are anticipated as the businesses grow and expand their operations.
As a result of this capacity development programme, 17 companies have succeeded in securing new or additional contracts from Anglo Platinum. The programme is also in line with the enterprise development requirements of the Mining Charter.
The second phase of the programme will concentrate on the monitoring and evaluation of individual companies. To assess the impact of the training and identify any further interventions that may strengthen performance and contribute to job creation.
