December 13, 2004: Today, U.S. Agency for International Development Administrator Andrew S.
Natsios announced the swearing in of Lloyd O. Pierson as the Assistant
Administrator of the Bureau for Africa at the agency. Pierson was confirmed by
the Senate on November 21, 2004.

October 21, 2004: Orphaned, abandoned and other vulnerable children from four informal settlements in Midrand, known as the “Olievenhoutbosch” community, are thrilled with their new Resource Centre,
launched 21 October 2004. The centre was opened by Russell Loubser, CEO of
Johannesburg’s Stock Exchange (JSE) and a Director of Noah. Denise Rollins,
Deputy Director of the United States Agency for International Development
(USAID) South Africa, and other distinguished guests from the US Embassy, USAID,
Noah’s Board of Directors, Rotary and numerous other donors and supporters
joined the day’s festivities.
USAID provides R22 million for new Primary School TV channel
October 19, 2004: Mindset Network and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID),
signed an agreement today to develop a new TV channel to improve access and
quality of education for primary school learners and educators.

Development (USAID) bilateral assistance to South Africa has exceeded R2.2
billion ($343 million) in the ten years between 1994 and 2004.

R35 MILLION USAID FOR Hospice Palliative Care
May 4, 2004: The Hospice Palliative Care Association of South Africa (HPCA) and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced today that the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has
granted funding of $5 million (approximately 35 million South African rands) to HPCA over the next two years.
United States Government provides R19 million for South Africa’s public health education channel
May 2, 2004: The United States Government announced today that it is investing R19 million
(U.S.$3million) towards expanding South Africa’s public health education
channel. The funding is part of the President Bush’s Emergency Plan for AIDS
Relief through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
The Health Channel is a satellite broadcast channel, delivering free education
to patients and healthcare workers in clinics and hospitals in South Africa. It
has been created through a public private partnership
between the Department of Health, Sentech and Mindset Network.

NEW ALLIANCE TO REDUCE UNEMPLOYMENT OF YOUNG PEOPLE IN AFRICA
February 2, 2004: International Youth Foundation officially launched the “Alliance for African
Youth Employment” with the US Agency for International Development (USAID), Nokia, and
Lions Clubs International Foundation. Both USAID and Nokia have collectively committed over
US$1.8 million to the initiative. Building on the success of the “Make a
Connection” program in South Africa, an alliance of global organizations will
help young people in Africa develop skills and strengthen attitudes
and behaviors so they can find and keep jobs, the International Youth Foundation
(IYF) announced today. Lions Clubs International will utilize its networks in
Malawi and Rwanda to provide training, mentoring, and placements for the program
participants, and to raise additional funds.
