USAID and Desmond Tutu Educational Trust Partnership Benefits 10 000 Students
September 17, 1998:
A grant of about R10 million from the United States Agency for
International Development (USAID) will enable 10 000 black South
Africans to join a unique workstudy program in the Western Cape
through the Desmond Tutu Educational Trust (DTET). The five
higher education institutions participating in the project will
also benefit with capacity-building activities. The grant was
announced today at a signing ceremony at Peninsula Technikon in
Cape Town.
Bright Future for South African Banking Services

Financial Services Training (FST) programme in partnership with and co-ordinated by the International
Foundation for Education and Self Help (IFESH) to empower historically disadvantaged personnel with
globally competitive banking skills.
New Director for USAID Arrives in South Africa (12 August 1998)
August 12, 1998: The new Director for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission in South Africa, William Stacy Rhodes, arrived in the country this past weekend. A native of
Tucson, Arizona, Mr. Rhodes, was sworn in on July 29, 1998. A senior Foreign Service Officer,
who began his overseas experience as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Bolivia in 1968, he will manage
a program with an average annual funding of $50 million.
USAID and Black Lawyers Association in Agreement to Train 240 Disadvantaged Students for the Bar
June 23, 1998: The South African Black Lawyers Association and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) signed a grant agreement that will provide practical academic training for 240 black law graduates and will assist in placing them with law firms to complete the required articles with professional firms, according to South African law.
Good News for South Africa's Higher Education
June 12, 1998: South Africa's 15 historically disadvantaged universities and
technikons will receive a R110
million boost from the US Agency for International Development
(USAID). USAID is funding
a program through which an American NGO, The College Fund/UNCF,
will work with South
Africa's historically disadvantaged institutions (HDIs) to
overhaul the quality of higher education
within the next five years. The project commitment was launched
by U.S. Ambassador James
Joseph and representatives from South Africa's HDIs in Durban on
Friday, June 12.
USAID Launches a Seven Year Health Care Project with the Department of Health
January 26, 2998:
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will launch a seven year,
R 240 million primary health care project with Health Minister Dr. Nkosazana Zuma. The EQUITY in
Integrated Primary Health Care Project, a partnership between the U.S. government and the South
African Department of Health, will initially focus on the Eastern Cape province. The launch will take
place at 10h00 on Tuesday, January 27 at Grey's Hospital in King William's Town.
