Highlights of the Week
On September 2, USAID announced the award of a new $5.8 million Justice Sector Strengthening Project in Rwanda. To be implemented by Chemonics International, Inc., this two-year justice sector capacity building project is a part of Rwanda’s Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Threshold Program, which was developed to address the country’s MCC Ruling Justly indicators. This is the third project launched to date under the umbrella of the MCC Threshold Program. Two others that began over the summer are Media Strengthening and Rwandan National Policy Strengthening Projects. The Justice Sector Strengthening Project aims to improve the professionalism, impartiality, and independence of the judiciary. It will also facilitate and extend the Government of Rwanda’s legislative reforms to promote judicial independence and to enhance civil liberties, voice and accountability, and political rights in Rwanda.
