Mrs. Ayo Joy Folorunsho is a member of the All Peoples Party (APP)
and the "only female" member of the Apapa Local Government
Council of Lagos State. Mrs. Folorunsho has been the minority leader
of the council since its inauguration.
In March 2001, the men in the party became uncomfortable with Mrs.
Folorunsho as the minority leader and began to take actions to remove
her. When the news got to the 100 women groups members of CEDPA and
COWAN (in Apapa zone), their leader, Princess J. Okafor, mobilized over
200 women from all walks of life. The women stormed the office of the
council chairman as a group, startling the chairman.
Because of the level of support that Mrs. Folorunsho received from
the women, the chairman promised her and the women that he would personally
ensure that she was not removed as the minority leader of the house.
They also seized the opportunity to present to the chairman other issues
that were of growing concern to women in the area. The chairman was
impressed and noted that he would like to form a relationship with the
women and to secure their support. They had proven to be a force to
reckon with.
