Machinga and Balaka Input for Assets Project

USAID/EBCM/ Emmanuel International

The Input for Assets project has proved to be extremely popular. Chiefs, committees and participants have shown a strong commitment to the work. This has been reflected in a willingness to start work early, to voluntarily continue work after the end of the standard working day and choose to work on Saturdays (instead of Fridays) in Muslim areas.

Mrs. Dula walked 20km roundtrip every day in order to work on one of the road rehabilitation sites. She chose to get up at 3:30am every morning for a 6am start on site. She is very excited about the project. In exchange for her labor she has now received a 50kg bag of UREA fertilizer and a 10kg bag of MH18 seed. She can now look forward to an increased harvest that will provide for her and her family throughout next year's hungry season.

Field staff have been inundated with requests for further projects. The level of interest in this project substantially exceeds the scale of work planned for next year.
