Manesi Harison - A Village Savings and Loans (VS&L) Group Participant

Central Region Livelihood Security Program (CRLSP); USAID/CARE

Manesi Harison is from Kamlembo village in TA Chitukula of Lilongwe district. She is 47 years old; she is married and has five children and three grandchildren. Manesi has no formal education. She joined Osauka Salema VS&L group in May 2000 and has since been contributing MK10 per week to the group's savings fund.

Manesi started brewing and selling beer thanks to a loan from the VS&L group. Every time she borrows MK1,000 for this income generating activity, she makes between MK3,000 to MK4,000. Profits enable her to repay loan and interest and keep the rest of the money made for her household. She was even able to save enough profits to buy iron sheets, cement, window frames and a door for a house.

The Business Advisory Services Manesi receives has helped her make sound business decisions. For example, when the maize she uses for brewing beer becoming scarce and too costly to realize any profits, she temporarily switched to selling cooked cassava.

The combination of the VS&L Group loans and the advice from the Business Advisory service has enabled Manesi and her family to improve their livelihood dramatically. Her business is growing and she is confident that a better future lies ahead for her and her family.
