With USAID support, an association of small-scale fishermen was able
to analyze issues surrounding the sustainability of marine resources
off Madagascar's west coast. As a result, the association advocated
protecting their rights and the environment and limiting large-scale
commercial fishing close to the coast. In response to this pressure,
the association was permitted to join larger fishing companies and government
ministries in making policies about the future of marine resources.
With the association's input, the National Environment Office reversed
a previous decision and added Mahajanga Province's coast as a priority
zone for coastal management.
