The Leland Initiative is a five-year, $15 million U.S. government initiative administered by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Its goal is to extend full Internet connectivity to 20 or more African countries. As part of its mandate, the Initiative team develops and conducts Internet awareness training workshops, from which the material in this manual is adapted.

The R&RS Project of USAID's Center for Development Information and Evaluation is operated by the Academy for Educational Development under Contract AEP-0232-C-00-4035-00. In addition to coordinating the Leland Initiative, R&RS serves USAID's information needs through operation of its Development Information Center, research in all USAID sector areas, information support to USAID Missions and regional and program offices, and other services.

The SARA Project works to identify social-sector issues of concern in Africa and participates in research, analysis, and dissemination activities related to these issues. SARA is operated by the Academy for Educational Development with subcontractors Tulane University, JHPIEGO, Macro International, Morehouse School of Medicine, Population Reference Bureau, and Porter/Novelli. SARA is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (AFR/SD/HRD) under Contract AOT-C-00-92-00178-00.

The Academy for Educational Development, which operates the R&RS and SARA Projects, is an independent, nonprofit service organization committed to addressing human development needs in the United States and throughout the world.
