The objectives of USAID's income generation activities in Africa are to generate poverty alleviating employment through broad-based, sustainable, market-oriented economic growth within a relatively free trade environment.
These programs promote economic growth through:
- Strengthening markets
- Expanding access and opportunity
- Investing in people.
Private Sector Development
The objective of USAID's private sector development activities in Africa is to provide policy and program options to increase employment and income for Africans through an expanded and efficient private sector. Areas of sectoral focus include agribusiness development, agricultural marketing and credit, and support to the telecommunications sector.
The types of activities USAID undertakes are:
- Policy and regulatory analyses
- Capacity building
- Organizational development
- Technical assistance and program support
- Market information and development
- Assessments of USAID and other donor-assisted programs to assist in future program planning.
Business Development
USAID is proud to be part of the United States Government's effort to expand trade and investment partnerships with Africa. There is optimism about Africa's future. The continent faces many problems--and there is tremendous variability among countries--but nonetheless recent progress is encouraging.
