Investments in basic education are essential to improving Africa's human capacity. That capacity is the foundation needed to realize increased productivity, improvements in health status and reductions in fertility, and the development of democracy.

USAID's basic education objectives in Africa are to:

  • Expand access to basic schooling, especially for girls and rural children
  • Assure a fundamental standard of quality in the delivery of basic education
  • Increase national commitment to sustaining resource levels for basic education sufficient to meet access, equity and quality goals
  • Improve national capacity to efficiently manage those resources for the delivery of effective education
  • Promote public-private cooperation at all levels through participatory policy dialogue and increased community & NGO involvement.
