The AIDS Support Organization (TASO), established in 1987, is the first indigenous nongovernmental organization (NGO) in Africa to respond to the needs of people living with HIV/AIDS. TASO is recognized around the world as a leader and innovator in HIV/AIDS care and support.
TASO provides services from 10 branches including HIV prevention education; counseling and support activities; basic medical care for opportunistic infections, sexually transmitted infections (STls), and family planning services; and social support, including skills training for income generating activities and orphan support. As of December 2003, more than 123,900 clients (65 percent of women) received care and support services through TASO.
Client numbers have increased steadily, with 15 percent growth between 2003-2004. More than 1,800 children are currently being assisted through school support and apprenticeship programs. TASO is in the final stage of providing anti-retrovirals to some of their clients and this may become a large part of their future program. A TASO branch and headquarters are located in Kampala inside the Mulago Hospital complex. |
