Press Release ArchiveThe following are archived USAID documents retained on this web site as a matter of public record. ![]() Film Stars Zhang Hanyu, Yuan Quan & Su You Peng Fight Human Trafficking By Making Chinese Version Of MTV Animated FilmWednesday, June 17, 2009 Film stars Zhang Hanyu, Yuan Quan and Su You Peng said their concern about young people being duped by human traffickers compelled them to record the Mandarin version of Intersection, an edgy anime-style film about trafficking and sexual exploitation. The film is produced by the MTV Foundation with support from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Zhang, Yuan and Su made their comments at the Beijing premiere of Intersection. The film aired last week on MTV China. Zhang, named best actor award at Taiwan’s 2008 Golden Horse Awards in 2008, plays a trafficker in Intersection. Yuan is cast as the young victim. Su (Alec Su) portrays a young man who pays for sex. ![]() MTV Launches Philippine Campaign to Fight Human TraffickingMonday, June 15, 2009 MANILA (May 18) – MTV and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) today announced a nationwide campaign to fight human trafficking. The drive starts with a free “MTV EXIT Live in Manila” concert at 6 p.m. May 22 at the Mall of Asia Concert Grounds. “MTV EXIT Live in Manila” will feature performances by the Philippines’ top home-grown artists including Christian Baustista, Gary Valenciano, Bamboo, Pochoy Labog, Sponge Cola, Kjwan, Callalily, Pupil, Duster, Kitchie Nadal, Rico Blanco, Itchyworms, Kamikazee and Parokya ni Edgar. ![]() Vet Program Launched to Prevent Animal-Human Disease OutbreaksFriday, June 05, 2009 Responding to the spread of infectious diseases from animals to humans, the United States and Royal Thai Governments, have launched Asia’s first training program for veterinarians to become “disease detectives,” specialists who trace and control animal diseases that could spread to human beings. The two-year Field Epidemiology Training Program for Veterinarians (FETPV), launched in Bangkok in collaboration by USAID, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), has six veterinarians from Burma, China, Indonesia and Thailand enrolled in the course. Heath officials note the 2009 Influenza A (H1N1), Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Nipah, and Avian Influenza H5N1 had their origins in animals. The four most recent pandemics – in 1918, 1957, 1968 and 2009 – were viruses with genes derived from animals.One Year After Nargis, American People Continue to Assist VictimsFriday, May 01, 2009 As part of America's commitment to the welfare of the Burmese people, the United States has provided nearly $74 million to assist recovery from the devastation of Cyclone Nargis which struck the Irrawaddy Delta last May 2. U.S. disaster relief has helped over 1 million Burmese since the cyclone. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has provided $56.6 million in disaster assistance, emergency food, water, shelter and health assistance, and early this year USAID pledged an additional $5 million to communities for clean water, shelter, and other critical needs. USAID Supports Vietnam's Efforts to Speed Customs Clearance with National Single Window WorkshopWednesday, April 22, 2009 More than 60 Vietnamese government officials specializing in international trade participated in a workshop to implement a National Single Window that will streamline cargo transfer and enhance trade efficiency by 2011. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) sponsored the workshop in partnership with the Association for Southeast Asian Nations’ (ASEAN) Single Window initiative and in collaboration with the General Department of Vietnam Customs. The National Single Window speeds customs clearance and the release of cargo by enabling data for imported goods to be submitted, processed and cleared in a single integrated process. Vietnam and other ASEAN member states have agreed to create their National Single Windows by 2012 in order to build an ASEAN Single Window (ASW). The ASW will link all ASEAN member states to increase regional trade and economic growth. ![]() USAID and MTV EXIT Release Animated Film to Raise Awareness about Human TraffickingWednesday, March 18, 2009 "Intersection", a hard-hitting animated film about human trafficking and sexual exploitation, premiered on March 20 on MTV channels in Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. USAID Workshop Helps Lao National Assembly Prepare for WTO AccessionMonday, February 09, 2009 The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is sponsoring a workshop for the Lao National Assembly to help parliamentarians learn from the experiences of Cambodia and Vietnam in their joining the World Trade Organization (WTO) and their implementation of U.S. Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) commitments. Malaria Parasite Resisting Effective Drug Therapy, the New York Times Reports, Citing USAID ExpertSunday, January 25, 2009 The parasite that causes the deadliest form of malaria is showing the first signs of resistance to the best new drug against it, the New York Times reported on January 26, citing recent medical studies and interviews with medical experts including Dr. John MacArthur of the U.S. Agency for International Development. Dr. MacArthur raised concern last April, on World Malaria Day, noting that scientific evidence is emerging that malaria parasites from Cambodia’s border with Thailand are increasingly tolerant to artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT), one of the most effective therapies against multi-drug resistant malaria.
