RDMA to Pledge Support for Coral Triangle Initiative at Manila Meeting

Wednesday, October 15, 2008

BANGKOK – USAID’s Regional Development Mission for Asia (RDMA) will detail its monetary support for the Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) – a multinational effort to improve the marine and coastal resources in Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste, and the Solomon Islands – at the second CTI Senior Official’s Meeting in Manila on Oct. 23.

USAID/RDMA will serve as the overall coordinator for the U.S. Coral Triangle Initiative (USCTI) program, involving the Department of State and other USG agencies in collaboration with CTI donors and development partners. RDMA’s contribution to the new USCTI program will support both the CTI regional actions and national activities, particularly in countries where USAID does not have a permanent Mission.
The region where the Indian and Pacific oceans meet is known as the Coral Triangle or "Amazon of the Seas" for its biodiversity. It is home to half the world’s coral reefs, 3,000 species of fish, and the greatest extent of mangrove forests in the world.

Its 6 million square kilometers of ocean and coasts support 120 million people, but are threatened by over-fishing, blast and cyanide fishing, global warming, and sedimentation and other forms of pollution from poor agricultural practices and deforestation.

The USG funding is intended to support the commitments and progress made by the CT6 governments on the CTI’s plan of action. Supporting the six CTI countries (CT6) is an association of development partners, including non-governmental organizations, private donor foundations, and governmental agencies, including USAID and USDOS.

In the coming months, the six CTI countries, together with the CTI Secretariat and its technical support groups, will prepare national and regional plans of action to:

  • Designate and manage "priority seascapes";
  • Apply an "ecosystem approach" to the management of fisheries and other marine resources;
  • Establish and manage marine protected areas;
  • Apply measures to strengthen resilience and adapt to climate change;
  • Strengthen procedures to improve the status of threatened species.
