U.S. Government Sponsors Workshop on Development of New Disability Law

Tuesday, July 31, 2007

Top government officials will meet at the Army Guest House today [July 31] for a workshop to start developing Vietnam's new Disability Law.

The seminar, for officials and members of the drafting team, is sponsored by the U.S. Agency for International Development. It is organized by Vietnam Assistance for the Handicapped, a U.S.-based non-profit organization with offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA).

MOLISA is heading the drafting process. Workshop participants also include members of the National Assembly and numerous ministries including Education and Training, Home Affairs, Justice, Health, Transport and Construction. Representatives from Vietnamese disabled person's organizations and the World Concern and Disability Forum are also expected to attend.

Participants will establish a schedule for drafting the new Disability Law before focusing on its content. They will also review current disability policies and analyze their effectiveness, looking for gaps in the current legal framework.
