U.S. Funds Seminar for Judges on Vietnam's WTO commitments

Monday, July 30, 2007

HO CHI MINH CITY – Judge Delissa R. Ridgway of the U.S. Court of International Trade and other legal experts will conduct a two-day seminar for Vietnam's judges on the implications of WTO membership for Vietnam’s judiciary.

This week’s seminar in Ho Chi Minh City addresses legal questions arising from global economic integration including:

  • Which of Vietnam’s WTO commitments will be directly applied by the courts?
  • What procedural changes are necessitated by the WTO?
  • How will the court implement commitments on transparency?
  • What court protection and enforcement does the Trade-Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement require?
  • How will Vietnam’s courts and the WTO dispute settlement process work in concert?
  • How should international trade cases be handled?

Funding and judicial expertise is provided by the U.S. Agency for International Development Support for Trade Acceleration (USAID STAR) project. The Supreme People’s Court and Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) are organizing the event.

"This collaboration of local and international agencies marks another step by Vietnam to integrate its economic and legal systems into the global economy. This benefits all partners," said David Brunell, the manager of USAID’s Economic Growth Program in Vietnam.
