USAID Names Mission Director to Colombia

Wednesday, August 18, 1999WASHINGTON, DC - Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced its new Mission Director for Colombia. George Wachtenheim was sworn-in at the Ronald Reagan Building ceremony by Linda Lion, Director of Human Resources at USAID.
Wachtenheim will oversee USAID's $57.8 million program in Colombia, which focuses on human rights, democracy, and alternative crop development programs. The program also includes $13 million to assist with earthquake reconstruction projects.
As a 25-year veteran of USAID, Wachtenheim brings considerable experience and expertise to Colombia. Prior to his new appointment, he served as Deputy Assistant Administrator in the Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean at USAID's headquarters in Washington, DC. Wachtenheim also has considerable experience and service in USAID's missions abroad. He has served as Mission Director in Mozambique and Peru and as Deputy Mission Director in Egypt, Honduras, and Bolivia. Wachtenheim was also Deputy Director of the Peace Corps in Venezuela and Peru after serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Peru.
Wachtenheim received his B.S. in Business Management/Administration from New York University. He also received the Presidential Meritorious Service Award in 1999.
