CONGRESSMAN WILLIAM DELAHUNT, SUPERINTENDENT OF QUINCY PUBLIC SCHOOLS EUGENE CREEDON, AND STUDENTS FROM QUINCY, MASS. TO PARTICIPATE IN KICK-OFF EVENT FOR OPERATION DAY'S WORK-U.S.A.
Broad Meadows Middle School - Quincy, Mass.

Wednesday, January 27, 1999 at 1:00 p.m.

Washington, DC -- Congressman William Delahunt (D-MA) will help students from Broad Meadows School in Quincy, Massachusetts kick-off their participation in Operation Day's Work-U.S.A., a program initiated by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Congressman William Delahunt (D-MA), Superintendent of Quincy Public Schools Eugene Creedon, students from Broad Meadows Middle School and a member of the Haitian-American community will participate in an assembly to commemorate their involvement in this project.

Operation Day's Work-U.S.A., adapted from a similar program in Norway is designed to teach the importance of global engagement, volunteerism, and community building. Annually, students select a developing country to study during the school year, and then spend a "day of work" volunteering in the community to raise funds that will be donated to education projects in a country they have chosen. This year, the students have selected Haiti as the focus country and are in the process of selecting the specific project.

The students at Broad Meadows have organized a clothing drive at their school. The clothes will be presented to a member of the Haitian-American community who has made arrangements to ship the clothes to an orphanage in Haiti. Congressman Delahunt will explain how Operation Day's Work-U.S.A. gives these students an opportunity to help people in developing countries while volunteering in their hometown.

Broad Meadows Middle School was chosen by USAID, the U.S. government's foreign aid agency, to be one of six pilot schools throughout the country to participate in Operation Day's Work-U.S.A., because of the students' commitment to promote diversity and encourage opportunities such as community service and global awareness to foster a sense of social responsibility. The work they have done has brought them national attention including receiving the "Global Activism Award" from Boston Celtics Coach Rick Pitino and the "Domestic Partnership Award" from USAID.
