HIV/AIDS Infected Mothers & Children

Durban, South Africa -- As Congress prepared to debate an Administration request for an additional $42 million to assist sub-Saharan nations overhwhelmed by HIV/AIDS, officials of the U.S. Agency for International Development attending the International AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa visited King Edward hospital in the South African City and were told by senior members of the medical staff that the infection rate among children has soared to 35% while at least 50% of adults being seen at the hospital are testing positive for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
