Departments of State and Education to Host Higher Education Summit for Global Development

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, and U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator and Director of U.S. Foreign Assistance Henrietta H. Fore will host a Higher Education Summit for Global Development in Washington, D.C., on April 29 and 30. His Excellency Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda, and, USAID Administrator Fore will speak at the opening dinner on Tuesday. The Summit aims to strengthen the role of U.S. and foreign higher education institutions in social and economic development worldwide.

Through this Summit, higher educational institutions in the developed and developing world, private sector businesses, and foundations will be able to build partnerships and share best practices for development. Particular attention will be paid to emerging and innovative technologies that can help overcome the obstacles to higher education and to knowledge and technology transfer in developing countries. By focusing on technology, the Summit hopes to promote the creation of new kinds of collaborative partnerships and strengthen existing relationships among public and private sector institutions committed to education and development worldwide.

Department of Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, Department of Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman, and Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt will also be participating in the Summit. In addition, representatives from more than 100 U.S. universities and colleges; approximately 90 foreign universities and colleges; and around 40 private sector businesses, foundations, and non-governmental organizations will attend. Among the many U.S. businesses participating are Cisco Systems, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, and Motorola. The Higher Education for Development is also a key contributor to this event.
