USAID Administrator Sworn-in by Secretary of State

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today Henrietta H. Fore was sworn-in here by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as the 15th Administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Fore concurrently serves as the Director of U.S. Foreign Assistance and chairs the National Security Council's Policy Coordinating Committee on Development. She was designated by President Bush as Acting Administrator of USAID and by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as Acting Director of U.S. Foreign Assistance on May 7, 2007.

Fore is the first female Administrator of USAID and is responsible for managing U.S. foreign assistance, including support to countries recovering from disaster, trying to escape poverty and engaging in democratic reforms. She oversees a staff of approximately 8,000, of whom more than 75 percent of are working overseas in USAID field offices.

"I know that she has a vision to revitalize USAID while bringing about stronger coordination among all the parts of government involved in humanitarian aid, economic growth, democracy and governance, and global health," said Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. "Henrietta Fore is the best person for the worthy task of building a 'whole of government' approach to foreign assistance."

Prior to this appointment, Fore served as the Undersecretary for Management in the U.S. Department of State from August 2005 to November 2007, and as the Director of the U.S. Mint in the U.S. Department of Treasury from August 2001 to August 2005. In addition, she served as a Presidential appointee at USAID from 1989 to1993, first as Assistant Administrator for Private Enterprise and then Assistant Administrator for Asia. During this period, she founded and served as the first Chairman of the United States Asia Environmental Partnership, a coalition of business, government and community organizations in the United States and 31 Asian nations. Fore was also a founder of the Financial Services Volunteer Corps.

Fore has a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Wellesley College in Massachusetts and a Master of Science degree in Public Administration from the University of Northern Colorado. She has also studied International Politics at Oxford University and studied at Stanford University Graduate School of Business. She is married and lives in Washington, D.C. and Nevada.
