USAID Provides Cyclone Assistance to Bangladesh

WASHINGTON, DC - The American people, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), are providing an initial $100,000 in emergency relief assistance for those in Bangladesh impacted by Cyclone Sidr. These funds will be used to expand ongoing emergency relief operations. USAID has deployed an assessment team that will work with the USAID Mission, U.S. Embassy and local authorities in the country to identify further needs and areas where the United States can be of assistance.
Prior to the storm making landfall, USAID pre-positioned relief supplies and equipment. With partners CARE and Save the Children, 30,000 emergency survival packages were moved to areas facing the oncoming cyclone and food was positioned for emergency response.
In addition to disaster response, USAID supports ongoing disaster mitigation and preparedness activities lead by the Government of Bangladesh, including efforts to improve emergency response to floods and to reduce the incidence of health problems associated with a disaster, particularly water-borne diseases. USAID supports the maintenance and operation of mobile water purification plants, zodiac boats, and a mobile health unit. Additionally, USAID supports the community-based approach to reduce the vulnerability of communities in flood plains and mitigate future flood damage in Bangladesh.
