WASHINGTON, D.C. - The American people, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), are providing $300,000 in emergency relief assistance for those impacted by heavy rains and severe flooding in Mexico's Tabasco and Chiapas states. A five-person USAID assessment team is in Mexico working alongside local authorities to conduct field assessments that will identify additional needs and sectors where we might be of assistance.
Since late October, heavy rains have resulted in flooding and the overflow of rivers and dams in Chiapas and Tabasco states in southern Mexico. According to the Government of Mexico, floods have affected more than 1 million people, nearly 26,000 of whom have been evacuated or relocated into 41 temporary shelters. On October 29, the Governor of Tabasco State declared a state of emergency due to flooding caused by the heavy rains. The State of Chiapas has similarly requested Federal assistance from the Mexican government. Structural, land, and agricultural damage in both states continues to be quantified.
USAID, in conjunction with its mission in Mexico City and the U.S. Embassy, continues to closely monitor the situation and is prepared to provide additional assistance if necessary.
