Washington, D.C. - The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), on behalf of the American people, announced it will provide an initial $50,000 to Burkina Faso due to the effects of flooding. The funds will be used for the provision of vouchers that will allow flood-affected people to purchase food and emergency relief supplies in local markets.

This new funding is in addition to the more than $3 million USAID initially provided to assist with relief and recovery in the most recent flood-affected countries in East and West Africa in fiscal year 2007. USAID personnel are on the ground in flood-affected countries to monitor the situation and coordinate with local governments.

USAID responded to 74 disasters affecting more than 173 million people in 55 countries in fiscal year 2006. In addition to responding to disasters, USAID works to build local capacity and expertise that prevents and prepares for disasters, mitigates the impact of disasters, responds to disasters, and rebuilds after disasters.

USAID continues to work with local governments in East and West Africa and the international humanitarian community to ensure that U.S. emergency assistance meets the most pressing and urgent needs of those affected by the floods.

The U.S. Agency for International Development has provided economic and humanitarian assistance worldwide for more than 40 years.
