WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), provided assistance to India in response to heavy monsoon rains that have caused significant flooding in the Assam, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh states.

U.S. Chargé d'Affaires Steven J. White declared a disaster due to the monsoons and subsequent flooding that has impacted 12 states in India and have killed at least 1,000 people, according to the Government of India.

In response, USAID has provided $50,000 through the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund to help meet the immediate emergency needs of flood-affected populations. The Government of India has been responding to address the needs of those impacted by the monsoon rains.

USAID will continue to monitor the situation and provide additional assistance as needed.
