WASHINGTON, D.C. - Due to the effects of Tropical Storm Yemyin in southern Pakistan, the U.S. Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has provided more than $390,000 to Mercy Corps, an international humanitarian aid organization, to distribute emergency relief commodities to assist affected populations in coastal areas of Sindh and Balochistan provinces in southern Pakistan. On July 1, U.S. Chargé d'Affaires Anne W. Patterson declared a disaster due to the effects of the cyclone.

On June 23, Tropical Storm Yemyin intensified, producing high winds, heavy rains and flash flooding, killing more than 255 people and displacing an estimated 250,000 more according to the United Nations. The U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, the capital city, reports that flood waters have severely disrupted commercial and port activities and widespread loss to the fisheries industry, cotton crops, livestock and infrastructure.

USAID will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates and additional assistance as appropriate.
