The United States Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), announced it will increase funding for three programs supporting early recovery and reconstruction in Lebanon.

USAID has provided:

  • $2.2 million to American Near East Refugee Aid (ANERA) organization to expand its existing USAID-funded food security, agriculture and livelihoods program. Focused on Southern Lebanon, ANERA will rebuild economic livelihoods of families affected by the crisis by helping farmers re-establish their agricultural production; enabling young people and unemployed persons to find productive work and earn income again; and facilitating economic recovery. As part of this effort, assistance will also be provided to farmers through cash grants to buy seeds, tools, and other needed inputs; aspiring entrepreneurs for vocational training; and rural communities to rebuild small-scale infrastructure.
  • Catholic Relief Services (CRS) will receive an additional $6 million to expand an existing USAID-funded multi-sectoral program. Activities will include the provision of fuel to vulnerable families for winter heating; the distribution of food supplies and hygiene kits; provision of basic materials needed to make damaged homes habitable through the winter; the rehabilitation of public community spaces; the improvement of access to community water and sanitation infrastructure; support to economic recovery, such as cash-for-work and small business restoration; and group psychosocial activities for vulnerable families affected by the war in 102 communities.
  • $1.2 million to CHF International for expansion of its food security, agriculture, and protection activities. This program will include the matching of underemployed community members with local cooperatives and community associations, in order to improve income as well as facilitate harvests; the resupply of harvest equipment destroyed during the conflict; and small-scale infrastructure repair including rehabilitation of a critical fishing market and warehouse. The program will also target the psychosocial needs of children and adults affected by the conflict, through communal support activities; equipping 15 public schools with basic education and recreational materials; and providing referrals to local mental health providers as appropriate and necessary.

This funding is part of the $230 million U.S. commitment to the people of Lebanon for humanitarian, reconstruction and security assistance announced by President Bush on August 21, 2006.
