U.S. Provides Wheat for Humanitarian Assistance in Lebanon

Amman - Today the United States, through the Agency for International Development (USAID), donated 700 metric tons of wheat to the World Food Program for immediate release and transport to Lebanon. The wheat will be used to respond to the immediate food needs of those affected by the conflict.
In brief remarks, American Ambassador David Hale said that the donation demonstrates the goodwill of the American people to the people of Lebanon.
The wheat commodities were milled into flour, and will be transported to Lebanon for scheduled arrival next week. The World Food Program will utilize these commodities through its regional emergency operation which is assisting 350,000 conflict-affected people within Lebanon.
Funding for this contribution is part of the U.S. commitment of $230 million for humanitarian, reconstruction and security assistance to Lebanon announced by President Bush on August 21, 2006.
