WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced the swearing in of Leon S. Waskin as the new Mission Director for Afghanistan. Director of U.S. Foreign Assistance and USAID Administrator Randall L. Tobias presided at the event and administered the oath.
"Just a few months ago, I had the privilege of seeing for myself USAID at work in Afghanistan. I can tell you, our country's commitment to supporting Afghanistan as it builds the foundations of a free society is everywhere in evidence. Leon will build on these achievements as the leader of a most impressive team," stated Ambassador Tobias in his remarks.
Waskin will oversee the $1.5 billion reconstruction and development program, one of the U.S. Government's most ambitious since the Marshall Plan helped to rebuild Europe after WWII.
A Senior Foreign Service Officer, Waskin has served with USAID for more than twenty years in eight overseas posts, as well as in Washington, DC.
Joining USAID as a Capital Projects Officer in Zaire in 1981, his extensive field experience includes Finance Director in Honduras, Project Development Officer in Nicaragua, and Assistant Mission Director in Madagascar. In 2003, he served as Acting Mission Director of the new Regional Development Mission in Bangkok, Thailand, and most recently as the agency's Representative in Mongolia.
Originally from Lansing, Michigan, Waskin graduated from Kalamazoo College with a bachelor's degree in political science. He holds a Master's Degree in Foreign Service from Georgetown University and is fluent in Spanish and French.
