Under Secretary Karen Hughes Visits USAID project in El Salvador

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Under Secretary of the U.S. Department of State Karen Hughes visited the El Salvador facility of Aid to Artisans, an entrepreneurial community outreach program funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

The Aid to Artisans project in El Salvador works with artisan communities to revitalize economic activity, generate employment and increase incomes of the region. Under Secretary Hughes visited the Aid to Artisans showroom and center, which displays the artist's pottery and crafts, provides technical assistance to local artisans, gives them access to communications and the Internet, supports new design and product development, and provides managerial training.

Aid to Artisans began the USAID funded program in El Salvador in 2002 in response to the earthquakes of 2001, which affected the lives of over 1.5 million people or 25% of the country's population. As a result, by January 2006, the program has generated more than 3,066 jobs in rural areas and over $1.87 million in international export and domestic sales. The program has also created more than 2,390 new products and infused design innovation throughout the country. Salvadoran products have been placed in more than 1,975 retail stores throughout Central America, the Caribbean, Italy, Germany, France, Australia, Canada, and the United States.
