WASHINGTON, DC - In response to the massive landslide which occurred earlier today in Southern Leyte Province, Philippines, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is providing an immediate $100,000 to the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) to support relief efforts and provide humanitarian assistance to affected communities. Additionally, USAID is airlifting emergency relief commodities to the Philippines, including 1,000 rolls of plastic sheeting, 1,000 water containers, 1,000 blankets, and 400 body bags. These items are valued at approximately $55,000, excluding transport.
Two weeks of unusually heavy monsoon rains triggered the landslide impacting all 3,000 residents of the village of Guinsaugon, with many feared dead, according to preliminary reports from the Government of the Philippines. Local officials report that a 1 km2 area is covered in thick mud, making the terrain unstable and difficult to traverse, hampering humanitarian operations. The Philippines military is conducting search and rescue operations in the affected villages. Continued heavy rainfall is forecast for the coming week.
USAID will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide additional updates as necessary.
