WASHINGTON, DC - In response to flooding and the mudslides associated with Hurricane Stan, USAID has provided a total of $309,993 to USAID/Guatemala for the local purchase and distribution of emergency relief supplies and helicopter support to relief operations. Of that amount, $150,000 was used for the purchase of fuel, the rental of air support, 3,700 blankets, 3,700 mattresses, water and additional relief supplies. With the remainder of the funds, USAID has airlifted emergency relief supplies, including 5,000 blankets, 5,000 hygiene kits and 200 rolls of plastic sheeting.

A USAID team has deployed to Guatemala from the regional office in San Jose, Costa Rica. The team will conduct damage assessments, needs analysis, and coordinate with local disaster officials.

Since October 1, heavy and continuous rainfall associated with Hurricane Stan has caused severe flooding and mudslides in Guatemala, affecting communities in the provinces of Escuintla, Guatemala, Quetzaltenango, Chiquimula, San Marcos, Chimaltenango, El Quiché, and Baja Verapaz.

USAID will continue to monitor the situation and provide additional updates as necessary.
