WASHINGTON, D.C. - The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced it will provide $100,000 in immediate disaster relief funding to assist flood victims in India.
Heavy monsoon rainfall and flooding in the states of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharastra, Goa, Orissa, and Karnataka, as well as flash floods in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir have caused the deaths of more than 1,100 people. In particular, on July 26-27, 2005 a record 37 inches of rain fell in western Maharastra State and Goa State, producing flooding and landslides that have killed 930 people and 27,000 heads of livestock and affected approximately 35 million people in 11 districts, including 25 million in the state capital Mumbai (Bombay). In addition, the flooding has destroyed approximately 10,000 houses, caused extensive crop damage to an estimated 225,000 hectares of land, and limited the availability of potable water. Damage to transportation, power, and telecommunications networks has complicated recovery efforts.
On August 3, 2005 U.S. Chargé d'Affaires Robert O. Blake declared a disaster due to the severe impacts of the flooding. In response, USAID is providing assistance through USAID/India, including $50,000 in Ambassador's Authority funds to support the Prime Minister's Relief Fund and an additional $50,000 to support relief efforts of a non-governmental organization. In addition, USAID/India has mobilized several partners to provide oral rehydration salt packets and Safewat, a sodium hypochlorite solution used as a water disinfectant, to the affected areas. USAID will continue to monitor the situation and provide additional updates as necessary.
