WASHINGTON, D.C. - The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced it will provide a $100,000 in immediate disaster relief funding to assist flood victims in China.

Heavy rains in Hunan, Guizhou, Gangxi, Chongqing, and Sichuan provinces in southern China and Heilongjiang Province in northeast China have affected 15 million people, killed at least 232 others, and destroyed 137,000 homes since the end of May. According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the Ministry of Civil Affair's reports that total damages have reached nearly $382 million and 510,000 hectares of farmland have been flooded. According to the Government of China's Flood Control and Drought Relief headquarters, weather forecasts predict this season's floods will be more extensive than in previous years.

On June 16, 2005, U.S. Ambassador Clark T. Randt, Jr. declared a disaster due to the floods in China. In response, USAID provided assistance through the U.S. Embassy in Beijing for the Red Cross Society of China for the purchase of emergency relief supplies. This amount includes $50,000 in Ambassador's Authority Funds and an additional $50,000. The USAID Regional Advisors for the Asia-Pacific region will continue to monitor the situation in consultation with the U.S. Embassy in Beijing.
