WASHINGTON, DC - Today, The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced the swearing-in of Dr. Mike E. Sarhan as its new Mission Director to Eritrea. Administrator Andrew S. Natsios presided at the event and administered the oath to Dr. Sarhan.

As Mission Director to Eritrea, Dr. Sarhan will oversee a program totaling approximately $60 million annually in development and humanitarian assistance. Program activities focus on health, education, capacity building and food security including emergency food assistance. Through USAID assistance Eritrea has achieved dramatic gains in child survival. Infant mortality was reduced from 72 deaths per 1,000 live births in 1995 to 48 per 1,000 in 2002 and under-five mortality fell from 136 deaths per 1,000 to 93 during the same period. USAID provides credit and counseling services to small rural business, improves access to safe water and continues to enhance the ability of Eritreans to participate in the development of their country through training and improved access to education.

A career foreign service officer with more than twenty-five years of experience in international development, Mr. Sahan joined USAID in 1991 as a Program Economist in the Africa Bureau. Following assignments in Malawi and Bosnia-Herzegovina, he was assigned in 2000 as Supervisory Program Officer in USAID/Kenya. In 2002 he became Mission Director in Guyana.

Dr. Sarhan holds two masters degrees and a PhD in economics from the University of California at Davis. He is married to Margaret Sarhan. They have three children, Monica, Anthony, and Michel.
