WASHINGTON, D.C. - The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced it will provide $50,000 in immediate disaster relief funding to assist flood victims in Sri Lanka.

Heavy monsoon rains that began on December 11 have caused severe flooding and landslides across central, north-central, and eastern Sri Lanka. According to the Government of Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS), the flooding and landslides have affected more than 185,000 families, damaged 16,200 houses, and destroyed more than 52,000 acres of farmland. In addition, international media sources reported that a landslide killed 4 people in Welimada District, Central Province, on December 15.

On December 22, U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Jeffrey J. Lunstead issued a disaster declaration due to the effects of the flooding. In response, USAID is providing assistance through USAID/Sri Lanka to SLRCS for the purchase of emergency relief items. USAID in coordination with the regional advisors will continue to monitor the situation for possible additional needs.
